Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between using KM or KVM switches and SingleControl?
The difference is we do it with easy to use and install software,
instead of expensive hardware and cabling, and the time to get it
installed.
SingleControl is very easy to install with very little configuration,
and can be uninstalled very simply. This make it great for temporary
or permanent installations. Sounds easier to install and less time
consuming than connecting all that cable, right?
Where is SingleControl used?
SingleControl uses include training stations, test benches, flight
sims, IT installation rooms and closets, trader desks, basically
anywhere multiple PC workstations are needed for one user.
Several monitors and PCs are often placed side-by-side for use
by one operator. SingleControl reduces user workspace requirements
by reducing desktop space wasted on multiple keyboards and mouse
areas. One can now make room for more desks and operators, which
allows greater revenue and profit potential.
Do I need a display for each PC workstation?
Generally, yes. SingleControl is built to be used on a multiple
system setup with multiple displays. However for smaller installations
you may be able to get away with using just one or two monitors.
Some monitors do allow multiple sources - 2 PCs per monitor. Check
with the monitor manufacturer for specs.
Although it wont be automatic, as you would have to switch
the monitors source with a button or similar way, you would
still need only one keyboard & mouse on your desktop.
How many computers can SingleControl be used on?
SingleControl software can be used across an unlimited number of
clients with just one master computer. Each client can also
be used standalone - simply interrupt the master just by moving
the client computers mouse or hitting a key on Windows
XP or 2000 systems.
Is it secure?
SingleControl is intended to be implemented over a LAN, where security
is not much of an issue. It can be run over wide area networks,
and is as secure as your network.
Does SingleControl burden the client or master computers, or even
the network?
No more than any other Windows service or utility. The usage is
fully automatic and transparent to the user. It requires very little
bandwidth to work effectively.
Does it work with Multiple Host machines?
Absolutely! Multiple Host (or Multihomed) machines, i.e. - a computer
with 2 or more Network Interface Cards (NICs) - work just fine.
SingleControl works by IP address, and can control computers that
are even on a separate sub-network.
Are there any incompatibilities?
Installation of SingleControl will disable certain features of pcAnywhere;
in particular the CTRL+ALT+DEL sequence generation function.
Why are the trial version downloads so
large?
Apteryx prefers to make our users' lives easier, and we provide
all required pieces that our software requires.
When software runs at system level, it needs certain software parts
that ensure proper installation and uninstallation, and to be fully
compliant with certain features of Windows.
Why isn't there a SingleControl Service download?
Service programs do not run on all flavors of Windows, therefore
we provide and maintain only applications as demos.
The SingleControl application demo is a fully functioning version
that is identical to the SingleControl Service program. The only
difference is that it runs as an application on your Windows PC.
